Conservatives for Clean Energy Virginia held the annual Clean Energy Champion Awards reception January 17, at the Omni Richmond. Over 100 people came out to learn more about CCE and their efforts in Virginia. Conservative thought leaders, business representatives, individuals in the clean energy sector, and members of the General Assembly and their staff attended.
The reception kicked off with remarks from CCE VA Executive Director Christopher West. West outlined the mission and purpose of CCE. Since launching in Virginia, CCE has reached out to a large number of conservatives, building a broad-based coalition to expand clean energy in Virginia. Following West, leading national pollster Glen Bolger presented a public opinion poll commissioned by CCE VA to show the growing level of support for clean energy by conservatives, and all Virginians. 86 percent of Virginia voters agree that we should take action accelerate growth of clean energy and energy efficiency. After Bolger’s presentation, West began the presentation of the Clean Energy Champion Awards. CCE gave awards to two legislators who have been instrumental in advancing clean energy policies in the Virginia General Assembly. Delegate Terry Kilgore and Senator Frank Wagner received the awards for patroning legislation last session that includes substantive energy efficiency investments, widespread adoption of affordable solar and wind energy, a framework for research and investments in battery storage, and a smart grid that will be needed to accommodate renewables. In addition, CCE also gave an award to Microsoft, a Virginia-based business who is leading the way in effectively incorporating clean and renewable energy into their business practices. Senator Frank Ruff presented the award on behalf of CCE to Vanessa Miller with Microsoft. CCE also gave their first Local Government Clean Energy Champion award to the Town of Bedford. Bedford Electric has initiated a renewable energy program to allow customers to purchase clean energy.
